A popular destination with Danish and European holidaymakers thanks to an estimated 2,200 hours of sun per year, the island town of Fehmarn in Germany enjoys a prized location in the Baltic Sea. Natural beauty and outdoor activities
Broad, sandy beaches and a gently sloping shoreline make Fehmarn a popular holiday destination for families with children. With a coastline of 87 km, Fehmarn offers windsurfing, kite surfing and a wealth of opportunities for horse riding, golf, sailing, diving and fishing. Equipment is easy to rent. Freshwater lakes and rugged cliffs dominate the landscapes providing ample photo opportunities. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will appreciate the island's wildlife reserves which are home to more than 200 species of migratory birds. The aquarium in the community of Burg on Fehmarn is a popular attraction and the FehMare pool complex, located on the island's south beach promenade, offers spa and recreation facilities such as seawater pools and saunas.
History and culture with a holiday house in Fermarn
Previously named Femera, Fimbria, Cimbria, Parva and Imbra and first settled by the Slavic tribe of Wagri in the early Middle Ages, the island of Fermarn was eventually Christianised and Germanised. A visit to the tiny village of Vadersdorf provides the perfect opportunity to experience traditional Baltic warmth and hospitality. The islanders revere St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sea travellers and grain sellers , whose church (St. Nikolai Kirche), is the second oldest on the island and traces its beginnings to the 11th century. Along with the Fermarn's perfect windsurfing conditions, the annual KiteSurf Trophy is gaining international attention. Cultural events, dance and music festivals are regular fixtures of the island's cultural calendar.
